Great Britain 1816 Bombardment of Algiers Medal Eimer-1084 PCGS SP63 $2,600

Silver. 50.5mm. An intricate and well-executed medal with nice eye appeal. The Bombardment of Algiers on August 27, 1816, was a major naval operation by a combined British and Dutch fleet to end the enslavement of Europeans by the Barbary pirates. Led by Admiral Edward Pellew (Lord Exmouth), the expedition successfully forced the Dey of Algiers to free over 3,000 Christian slaves and sign a treaty formally abolishing the practice of enslaving Europeans.
