The dies were prepared by blasting them with sand before striking the coins. The Mint thought collector demand would be high for these new types of proof coins, so they struck 500 of them. However, collectors at the time preferred the classic mirrored finish of previous proof gold issues. Just 116 pieces were released, with the rest being melted.
