  | Territorial Gold 1849 Mormon $5 NGC AU53 $43,500 Mormons participated in the California Gold Rush, and returned with bags of gold dust to the Mormon community in Salt Lake City. In 1849, the Mormons struck four denominations of gold coin, from the two and a half to the twenty dollar. The designs were similar, a mitre and all-seeing eye on the obverse, and clasped hands on the reverse. Although most of the Mormon issues were melted in later years, the coins did circulate for some time in the Salt Lake City area. As a result, most examples seen today are well-worn. In comparison, this gently worn example serves as a nice example of a sharper piece. Greysheet CPG is $50500. Holder has a couple small chips on front and back stacking edges.
